ZAP Music presents: SONGS

Elegy

Guitar solo by John Meldrum

I have chosen this moment for an intimate solo guitar piece to symbolize Dr. King's acceptance speech for the Nobel Prize.  I love how this music works with the kids, they listen so intently whether it's a group of twenty in a classroom or 500 all together in a theater. It also works perfectly in the context of the show where there is a turning point just ahead.

NARRATION : Amidst many hardships and  difficult times  in the years that followed, there were two great victories for the Civil Rights movement in general and for Dr. King in particular. When the landmark Civil Rights Act finally found passage through Congress in June 1964 and was signed into law by President Lyndon Baines Johnson on July 2nd, the dream of equal rights for all American citizens came much closer to becoming reality. And when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was chosen as the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, the believers and campaigners in the movement could  look up with pride as he read his acceptance speech in Oslo.
