"Cover Me" is a rockin' reggae number that lets French-American soprano Natalie Gond shine. She's been with me a long time, and with her classical music background combined with a natural gift for the blues, Natalie's the perfect candidate for the music that I aspire to in Peace Oratorio. I needed a rocker to end Act 1, and "Cover Me" fit the bill. The bridge on this song has a series of chromatic descending 7th chords in the choir and the keys as the soloist sings about these crazy angels that make gold threads from invisible spider webs to protect our hero in the cold harsh streets of reality. Rock on!
Lyrics
COVER ME
These wings of gold, Ooh
Comin’ down to cover me
Ye wings of old, Ooh
comin’ to me like a dream
Oh life is short, Ooh
Go by faster than light
Yet ye go on, Ooh
Shinin’ in the ray of night
With wings of gold
Cover me
Ye wings of old
Cover me, Come cover me
These streets are cold, Ooh
Try to find a place to be
I feel so old, Ooh
Won’t you come on down and cover me?
With wings of gold
Cover me
Ye wings of old
Cover me, Come cover me
Ooh, Ooh, Ooh, Ooh
Solo/ Bridge : They come floatin’ down, they’re all around
Just over your head at the top of your bed
A little lullaby from a night fly,
Spinnin’ a web for some new threads
Cover me, Cover, Cover Me, Cover me
Cover me, Cover, Cover Me, Come Cover me
Oh give my soul, Ooh
Three precious things
Love, Joy, Vision, Ooh
Won’t you come on down and cover me
These wings of gold, Ooh
Comin’ down to cover me
Ye wings of old, Ooh
Comin’ to me like a dream
With wings of gold
Cover me
Ye wings of old
Cover me
With wings of gold
Cover me
Ye wings of old
Cover me, Come cover me
Cover me, Cover Me, Cover Me, Come Cover me (Ad Libs)
With your wings of gold (4x)
Ye wings of old, Oh ye wings of old,
Come and cover me, come on and cover me,
Won’t you please, please cover me,
With your wings of gold,
Cover me, Cover Me, Cover Me, Come Cover me
Ahh, (softly) Ooh
